6 Tips to Thoroughly Clean Your Carpet

6 Tips for Thoroughly Cleaning Your Carpet

Do you have a carpet where you or your children sometimes spill things, crumbs from those delicious cookies get stuck in your carpet, or your dog has walked over it with dirty paws? We all know the feeling. Whether your carpet is in the living room, children's room, or dining room, crumbs always seem to get trapped or it gets dirty. A stain on your carpet can also happen quickly.

Properly maintaining your carpets is important. Not only to keep your home clean but also to protect against dust and pests. Regularly vacuuming your rugs is a must. However, we also recommend occasionally giving your carpet a deep clean. Here are 6 tips to help you.

  1. Vacuum All Sides of Your Carpet

The most obvious tip is to vacuum your carpet. Vacuuming once a week is the minimum. Vacuum both the top and the underside of your carpet. Also, be sure not to forget to vacuum the floor underneath your carpet. Now that the most superficial dirt from the floor and carpet has been removed, you can start with a deeper cleaning.

  1. Air It Out

Your carpet is always indoors and collects dust and odors. Let your carpet air out outside. Hang it on a clothesline or a tree. If you have a carpet beater, you can also beat your carpet to remove dust. Don’t beat too hard to avoid damaging the warp threads of the carpet.

  1. Treat Stains as Quickly as Possible

Treat a stain as soon as you can! The faster you act, the better the chance you can completely remove the stain. Blot the stain as much as possible. Use absorbent paper like kitchen roll or a clean white cloth. Make sure to use an up-and-down motion and avoid rubbing.

Moisten the cloth slightly with lukewarm water. Then blot the stain and wring out the cloth. Place the damp cloth on the stain until it disappears. If the stain doesn’t disappear and remains stubbornly visible on the rug, try removing it with a carpet cleaner. Again, be sure to blot!

  1. Move Your Carpet

Has your carpet been in the same spot for months, and have you been walking over the same corners and parts of your carpet for months? This can cause permanent marks. The areas you regularly walk on will flatten over time. Rotate your carpet regularly. Also, move furniture that stands on the carpet regularly. By moving tables, chairs, or sofas, you can avoid permanent marks.

  1. Buy Reliable Products

There is a wide range of cleaning products available. Finding your way through that selection is not easy. Not all products are equally reliable; some can even be harmful to your carpet and your health. It is never recommended to wet carpets. The best approach is always to clean locally. Very soft qualities made from polyester (which feel very soft) are best never wetted; if you do, the fibers may lay flat.

Ask the retailer for advice. A good tip is to test a new product on a small corner of the carpet. This way, you can see how your carpet reacts to that product.

  1. Ask a Professional

A carpet cleaner can come to your home or you can bring your carpet to them. Having a carpet professionally cleaned is not cheap and usually costs between 50 and 100 euros. It is not always necessary to have your rug cleaned by a professional. When you maintain your carpet well, you can clean it yourself.

What about a high-pile carpet?

Don’t worry, cleaning a high-pile carpet is not harder than a regular carpet. Most dirt can be removed by vacuuming once or twice a week, just like with a normal carpet. Additionally, you can use special vacuum brushes for high-pile carpets. These often come standard with vacuum cleaners. As with any other carpet, stains should also be removed quickly by blotting.
